Major risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) are not addressed in the United States, according to a report by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP).
This report summarizes health information of 37,000 people who are at risk for kidney disease. The Risk factors include diabetes, hypertension or family history of kidney disease. Half of the participants in the report had CKD, but only two percent were the aware. Those with the disease tend to have other serious health problems such as obesity and anemia.
"The awareness of risk factors and can the need for screening a long way to go for early detection and prevention of kidney disease, "says Allan Collins, MD, President-elect and Director of the NKF's KEEP Data Coordinating Center.
